“Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd His skin was pale and his eye was odd He shaved the faces of gentlemen Who never thereafter were heard of again He trod a path that few have trod Did Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Based on Christopher Bond's retelling of the Victorian pennydreadful The String of Pearls, (which was itself a retelling of a British myth, possibly rooted in truth) this musical (with a book by Hugh Wheeler) tells the tale of Sweeney Todd, a murderous barber, and his partner in crime, Nellie Lovett, a baker who disposes of the bodies by baking them into her pies. Meanwhile, Anthony Hope, a sailor who saved Todd's life, falls in love with Todd's estranged daughter, Johanna, who is being brought up as the ward of the twisted Judge Turpin. Includes the songs "Not While I'm Around," "Pretty Women," and "A Little Priest." “His voice was soft, his manner mild He seldom laughed but he often smiled He’d seen how civilized men behave He never forgot and he never forgave Not Sweeney Not Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street…”
“…bloody damned well.” “…very impressive…dramatic flair…wonderful”Read the full review Patti Roberts Sacramento News and Review
“I am one of your Sacramento Bee Free Ticket winners. I bought at extra ticket for my mother and we all went to the show. We are season ticket holders for the Broadway Series with the California Music Theater, and have been for at least 5 years now. I just want you to know that I have told everyone how much we enjoyed Sweeney Todd - much more so than many of the Broadway Series that we have sat through. The talent was great. We enjoyed the intimacy of the theater. I got a bang out of all of the characters. More importantly, I was wide awake through the whole performance which is sometimes difficult after a long day at work. I e-mailed all of my co-workers and told them to go. My daughter is going and her friends have purchased tickets. You can count on us as regulars!” -- Laurie Sweeney (no relation)
“I just wanted to drop you a note about how much I enjoyed your produiction of Sweeny. The talent level was superb, the orchestra outstanding, vocally and directing solid, costumes and set wonderful. You took on a challenging piece that only a company like yours could pull off. The theater community should be grateful for your daring and determination. WELL DONE!” -- David Czarnecki
“What a show! I am amazed at what a difficult work Sweeney Todd must be to pull off and how seamless it was on your stage. The direction and staging was terrific, the talent incredible, and the set, lighting and sound great too. I found myself forgetting how dark the story really is and feeling Sweeney’s pain.” -- Jeannette Caruso
