The Spectacular Rock-Opera Jesus Christ Superstar is now playing on the 24th Street Theatre Stage!

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Introduced in 1970, it highlights the political and interpersonal struggles of Judas Iscariot (Steven L. Winlock) and Jesus (Tevye Ditter). The action largely follows the canonical gospels' accounts of the last weeks of Jesus’ life, beginning with Jesus and his followers arriving in Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. Twentieth-century attitude and sensibilities as well as contemporary slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the political depiction of the events. Stage and film productions accordingly feature many intentional anachronisms.

A large part of the plot focuses on the character of Judas who is depicted as a conflicted, tragic figure who is not satisfied with what he views as Jesus’ lack of planning, and alarmed by his relatively recent claims of his divinity.

The Runaway Stage Production (RSP) marks the first staging of this show for RSP and is directed by award winning director Bob Baxter, choreographed by Pamela Lourentzos, musical and vocal direction is by Christopher Cook, and costume design is by award winning costume designer Lillian Baxter. This production includes the full RSP resident orchestra completing a wonderful theatrical experience!

This season marks RSP’s 10th anniversary season and Jesus Christ Superstar is an energy filled show with a fantastic Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber score including I Don’t Know How to Love Him, What’s The Buzz, Everything’s Alright and the show stopping title song Jesus Christ Superstar. Join us for an evening of great musical theatre. Jesus Christ Superstar runs through August 23rd, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Snow White
With lips as red as rubies, hair black as ebony, and skin as white as snow, Princess Snow White is the most beautiful woman in the land. This is as much a curse as it is a blessing. Snow Whites’ beauty earns her the murderous jealousy of her stepmother, the queen - formerly the most beautiful in all the land.

Fortunately for Snow White, she has the loyalty of the Dwarf brothers, who take her in, but ultimately cannot protect her from the queen's scheme to see her lovely, innocent stepdaughter dead. Tricked into taking a bite of the poisoned apple, the lovely princess sleeps until Prince Charming awakens her with "love's first kiss".

Here is a funny, heartwarming, sometimes scary re-telling of a perennial favorite. The Queen is lovely, but wicked through and through. The Dwarf brothers are an endearing bunch, always good for a laugh and a lot of physical humor, while the Prince is gallant and handsome, as all brave princes should be.

You say Goodbye, and I say Hello . . .
Storybook Children’s Theater gives a sad Goodbye, to co-producer Kathleen Flint, and a warm Hello, to Anne-Marie Trout.

Kathleen is leaving Storybook, and the RSP Board, after many years of hard work; to not only spend more time with her lovely family – but, to complete her college education, which has taken a backseat for several years. You go, girl!

We wish her well and look forward to her appearances on stage, as time permits.

Stepping into the co-producer spot is Anne-Marie Trout.

Anne-Marie is a recent addition to the RSP Board, and a long-time member of the Sacramento acting community. Along with her continued appearances on stage, Anne-Marie will be stepping up her backstage duties, directing and producing quality children’s theater. Anne-Marie brings a unique perspective to the Storybook stage and we all look forward to her new, expanded role.

    RSP is looking for HERO’s!
Dear Family, Friends, and our cherished Patrons,

RSP has been celebrating our 10th Anniversary Season with outstanding productions of our Broadway Stage, Storybook Children’s Theatre, and Youth Musical Theatre Workshops. Our 2007 season opener of “CHICAGO” was truly a Blockbuster performance for which we were very proud to present to the community, along with consistently entertaining storybook productions that are enjoyed by children of all ages, as well as, adults. Additionally, we have been so proud of our workshop kids this year with wonderful productions of ANNIE, and an outstanding Master class performance of Little Shop of Horrors! Our 2007 Season will be full of treasured memories that will live on in our hearts.

As a nonprofit educational corporation, we continue to face the challenge of rising production costs, theatre and facility rental agreements, office administration costs, etc., for which we have little to no control over. Furthermore, as individuals, we are all faced with economic challenges like gas prices, housing costs, and our children’s educations, (just to name a few), which we have to balance with our “entertainment” budgets. Unfortunately, financial struggle has become a common story in Sacramento across many theatre and performing arts companies, which is sad as we are so “artistically rich” in this community. Although the RSP Board of directors and volunteers have worked tirelessly to maintain not only the highest quality production values, theatre education, and the best customer service to our patrons that we could possibly deliver, the bottom line is financial support to keep the “Stage Door” open at RSP.

So as exciting as 2007 has been for us, it has also been quite a financial challenge and we are faced with an increasingly difficult scenario. We are making a plea to our extended RSP family and theatre supporters for tax deductible financial donations to help out with the remaining 2007 season. In return we would offer the following:

$100.002 General Admission Tickets to either Jesus Christ Superstar or Jekyll & Hyde (value $36.00)
$250.006 General Admission Tickets to either show (value $108.00)
$500.0012 General Admission Tickets to either show (value $210.00)

If you are interested in further sponsorship of one of these shows, please contact us directly and we can discuss additional benefits.

Finally, to the Staff, Crew, Performers, Orchestra, Technicians, and Artisans of RSP, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and look forward to continued success and great theatre for Sacramento!

    Sincerely,

    Bob Baxter, President
    Runaway Stage Productions

    Tell us What You Think!

RSP is looking for input from you, our friends and patrons, on what you think of RSP. Applying for grants and funding opportunities is always a difficult project, and RSP is always working on these endeavors, so we are looking to you, our friends and patrons, to help with some information. Funding organizations are always looking to see how a program impacts the people who access the services it provides, so we are asking you to share your thoughts. If you have had an experience that has touched you, or someone you know, please let us know. We are looking for any stories or thoughts you may have had about the work that RSP does. So whether you have seen a show that you thought was well done, or if you have been involved in our YMTWs or if you just would like to send a letter of support please feel free, we would love to hear from you. In addition, if there is something that you feel we could work on, or if there is a concern you have please also feel free to send that along with your thoughts. Please be sure to include your name and contact information along with your letter. We appreciate your support for our work and we hope that with your help we can achieve some additional funding and be able to continue to produce the best community theatre around.
